Greetings stranger, welcome to the start of my TL;DR Sunday. Where I’ll be sharing stuff that I find interesting, learned, or been through you get the idea.
Let’s dive right in!
This week, let’s talk about COPYING OTHERS!
Inspiration is a crucial part of creatives work-life, it is hard to find and create something that has never been done before, so WE COPY. When you start with something new, YOU COPY, we all COPY. I’m guilty of that myself since I didn’t know better.
Yesterday I revisited one of my favorite books from Austin Kleon, Steal Like an Artist and there is one phrase that suits this whole COPY topic.
“You don’t want to look like your heroes, you want to see like your heroes.”
Which I translated into my own words
„Don’t copy my work, rather examine my work, try to see what I see,
and build on it.„
Copy to learn
Copying is where we all start. You see something you like and then try to recreate it. Then you post it on your socials all proud, most of the time without proper credits and then you move on.
The problem with this is that if you do it this way, you are no longer YOU, you are a less interesting version of someone else.
So, what are you waiting for do it your way!
We are a mix of people around us, people we follow. So for once, instead of imitating, add to it. Mix it with your other interests. Add your own sprinkle of magic powder to it that’s how you become the best version of yourself.
Thank you for reading this kind stranger and see you next week!
